Having found it hard to plan "large outdoor adventures" with our large family, I turned to GeoCaching as an opportunity to spend some time with the kids outside and moving. GeoCaching provides us with the opportunity for some fun "mini outdoor adventures" !!
GC1C20K - a park.
Did anyone see that big fat guy fall flat on his face in the snow as he walked back to his car?
That would be me...
But, did you see the smile on his face?
That would be a "found it" smile!

GC1HFFY - The ol' sledding hill
GeoCache located in the Southwood Park
Parking is available on the South West side of the park off of Terracewood Drive.
Back in the late 1970's and early 1980's - this was a great little sledding hill.
Sometime in the late 1980's a grove of trees was planted along one side of the hill, thus providing a place to hide a cache some twenty years later!
GC107DT - Egg Zackly
Find #2 of a "two out of three" day!
(I did log a maintenance request too...)
TFTC!!
-----------------------------
Maintenance Log
Blech...
The log was soaked, and covered with mold. There was no way to write on it. I dug through my wallet looking for something to replace it with, but alas, all there was was those hundred dollar bills! (yeah, right).. I logged my visit on a tiny scrap of paper from a receipt.
Someone may want to put a new log on this one... In addition to being wet, now with the cold weather, it was partially frozen...
Regardless, TFTC!!
GC1CW3H - I Gotta Go Real Bad
#2 on a "two out of three" day.
2nd attempt, and another DNF...
I'm going to loose it looking for this one.....

TFTC!
GC1D642 - Soccer Girls Go! Game Three
One quick find with #4 of 5 (daughter), while #1 of 5 (son) was using the archery range.

GCMKFY - 4 Sisters on the River

WOW - quite the hill there... I wanted to slide down on my "tail end" into the Minnesota River!

GC1H4QW - Lion around in Jordan
Dang...

Fifth of five found today... On a "kid-less" afternoon...
Also, Since I never made the camping trip I was planning on taking EAGLE TB to, and have held it for over a month now, I decided to drop it off, and get it moving again.
Sorry for hanging on to it for so long..
Since I dropped the EAGLE TB off, I grabbed the LAKE SUPERIOR DUCK TB, and will keep it moving down the flyway!

GC15HW4 - The Knights of Shakopee: Quest I
Second of five found today... On a "kid-less" afternoon...
I saw an AMAZING sight. I came in from the north, and just as I was going to cross the bridge, a yearling doe was standing on the crosswalk. I took several minutes to enjoy her presence. After a while I slowly walked towards her, and she trotted off to the edge of the woods, but not before she let me get within ten feet of her!TFTC!
Is this one of the greatest outdoor sports, or what ?!?!?
GC15HWH - The Knights of Shakopee: Quest II
First of five found today... On a "kid-less" afternoon...

GC17PYT - Raspberry Ridge
I squeezed out a couple of quick finds with #3 of 5 today, while waiting for child #4 of 5 to finish her sewing class.
Lesson learned on this cache... While Caching, if you are "carrying" your keys (as in your hand), DO NOT hook them on a branch while filling out the log. You just may forget them there, and have to go back into the woods after you get back to your car and remember you left them back at the cache!TFTC!

GC199AD - North of the MN River
This was the last of ten caches #1 of 5 and I visited today.
I had to drop my car off for some transmission work, and since we both had the day off, I needed some "down time" after the RNC Assignment, and #1 of 5 needed something to keep him busy today, we ran around Bloomington grabbing up a few caches!
This cache also contained a Travel Bug! This Travel Bug is the Cache Ninja - Blue Travel Bug (TB1F8W9). Unfortunately, the Blue Cache Ninja was injured... He had SEVERED LEGS to be exact...
I will be sure Blue Ninja gets some good R&R time camping in northern Minnesota during an upcoming camping trip!
#10 of 10 / 9 of 10 found.
Great cache! TFTC!!

On a side note, this was the first cache I visited that contained a Travel Bug! What is a Travel Bug? A Travel Bug is a track-able item that someone grabs out of one cache, and drops off in another. The movements of the Travel Bugs are logged at Geocaching.com.
I picked up the Eagle Travel Bug, that has been on the move since August 28, 2004 - where it started it's journey in the Netherlands! How cool is it that it has made it's way here, to Bloomington, Minnesota??!?!?
#5 of 10 / 9 of 10 found.

GC1A2KE - Slow Hand
I'm still learning... this one makes 2 for 2 today!!
I looked right at (or more like through) this cache - and spent another 20 minutes looking. Just as I was going to give up - I tried one last time... Got this one on my way out...
TNLNSL
More CITO... Man, it can get nasty.
Blech. Glad to know that I am making a difference though!
GC1A358 - Morgan's End
Yup... Us noobies need to use the clues until we get some experience... I tried for this one two days ago - and came up empty handed.. I "cheated" a bit by reading the details about this cache, and voila!
This one all but BIT me the other day, but yet I missed it. I found it within minutes today!!!
Morgans End - GC1A358
Did Not Find
-------------------------
My 2nd of the day (and third attempt overall)...
After this DNF, I am 1 for 3... Will this get any easier?? (grin)
Being new to this - perhaps I need to pay a bit more attention to the cache's page... I was expecting / looking for something a bit more "traditional" in size...
Had I
A Lesson learned...
Again, just like Hanging out at Harrison - GC1A35E - I work close, and I am determined....
Hanging out at Harrison - GC1A35E
Did Not Find
--------------------------
Wow... This GeoCaching is harder than I thought... But, gimme a break - after all this was only my 2nd cache attempt - I'm what you'd call a noobie!
I had four hours between getting off duty, and having to return for a meeting. So - I thought I would try to snag a couple of caches close to work...
I DNF this one - but I did find an spot that looked like it was where the cache COULD HAVE been... (So obvious that perhaps it was meant to throw a noobie (like me) off....)
I work very close to here, so since I DNF, I'll be back!! The gauntlet has been thrown...
Couple of notes...
#1 The parking lot was torn up and heavy machinery was on site trenching for some new sewer lines... I parked in the adjoining residential area.. Keep that in mind (at least for the next week or so...)
#2 I CITO'ed... and I mean TEE to the OHHH!
Yikes - the area I was looking was LITTERED with trash... Old clothing, an old GLASS 16 oz coke bottle - one with the old thin foam coating, a partially full, capped bottle of an unknown fluid, an old 3.5 floppy, a coffee can lid, and more bits of plastic that I could even carry (without a bag)...
I will persevere! I will be back!!
ScoutMasters Revenge - GC18M6W
The GPS came today... (I'll post a photo later...)
After work, I had to take #2 of 5, and #3 of 5 to Boy Scouts... I was all to eager to do so!
While at the park, I played with my GPS a bit to try and familiarize myself with it's functions.
After Boy Scouts - #2 of 5 wanted to go home with mom on his bike (that #1 of 5 rode to the park)... So, #1 and #3 of 5 and I decided we would try our very first GeoCache!
(It was only .67 miles from the park....)
The GPS took us behind a building and to a trail that I had never even known was there... Quite a cool area... We followed the GPS until we got to the area near the cache, and started looking... We looked and looked - and was not finding anything - I was close to giving up with a DNF (Did Not Find) when I decided to approach it from a completely different angle... and Viola! There it was!
OUR FIRST CACHE!
We TNLNSL (Took Nothing, Left Nothing, Signed Log) and headed back.... in total - about 30 minutes.. But a long hike up a big hill...
Just goes to show that GeoCaching CAN be good for a little exercise (exercise that I would not have gotten otherwise...)
It wont be as "genuine" as the real thing, but maybe we will head back and get a photo or two from the area - for posterity's sake....
On a side note... This was a pretty cool find because the Scoutmaster that was seeking revenge.... It was #2 and #3 of 5's actual Scoutmaster!!
A Virtue
Well, my patience paid off in some good karma! I got an email this morning that said my package will be shipping today, and from locally!! Mpls/St.Paul area!
WOO HOO! I should have my GPS in the next day or two!
Good things come to those who (are willing to) wait!
Yeah, ok... I added a little bit!
Preparing
September 2nd and 8th.
Yeah, that seems like a long time to wait, but remember folks - I got this thing for between 50 and 80 dollars less than most retailers are selling it for. Given the pretty fair deal I got on the price, an extra few days waiting is a pretty good trade off. I am not complaining.
In the time, the wait time will allow me to get a "go-bag" prepared...
What is in a GeoCacher's "go-bag"?
It would seem the answer is as diverse as the number of cacher's out there... But I did find a pretty good "resource" to get me started.
First I visited the Groundspeak Forums... As I was poking around the forums, I located a post about a pretty extensive list for a GeoCacher's "go-bag"...
Caching Backpack: What to Include.
(please forgive me if that link does not work. I do not know if non-registered users can read the forum.)
Being new to this, I am going to hold off with such an extensive pack, and am thinking about an over sized fanny-pack style...
I have most of the things I think I will need, so it's just a matter of getting a "just the right sized" bag, and putting it all together.
Man, I am really looking forward to getting out there!
First Step
I have been looking at my options for a couple of weeks now, and felt that this unit was the best compromise between cost and functionality. It has received RAVE user reviews, and I was able to find one at just slightly more that half what many retailers are charging for them.
Here are some specs...
Unit dimensions, WxHxD: | 4.2" x 2.2" x 1.2" (10.7 x 5.6 x 3.0 cm) |
Display size, WxH: | 1.3" x 1.7" (3.3 x 4.3 cm) |
Display resolution, WxH: | 176 x 220 pixels |
Display type: | 256 level color TFT |
Weight: | 5.5 oz (156 g) with batteries |
Battery: | 2 AA batteries (not included) |
Battery life: | 14 hours |
Waterproof: | yes (IPX7) |
Floats: | no |
High-sensitivity receiver: | yes |
PC interface: | USB |
RoHS version available: | yes |
I am looking forward to it's arrival, and some "play time"!
Introduction
With the boys getting older - I see some potential for both locating, and hiding geocaches in and around our neck of the world.
There is an added benefit of some (needed) exercise for my health, and a little more "out-of-doors" time that I am lacking right now.
This is still an "in-theory" hobby that I am wanting to find out more about... So this will be a work in progress..
I debated between creating this new "Caching with Dad" blog, our just using the "Dad's Outdoor Journal" blog.
I checked, and "Caching With Dad" was still available, so I grabbed it... We shall see how this works out.
I have been talking this interest over with a couple of good friends, (My good buddy Ed who has been a GPS dude for over a year now, a co-worker (Mark) who has been involved in GPS since I have known him (14 years), and a fellow blogger Bill, the "King of Clubs").
Ironically the day I asked Bill if he had a GPS, and if he had ever GeoCached... He sent me a message from his squad to "hold on".... He stopped up in the dispatch center carrying a box with him. He had just (a couple of days before) broken out a GPS unit that he received as a gift a while back, and had not used yet....
He too seems like he could be interested...
Perhaps we could inspire each other just a bit, and try our hands at a couple of caches ourselves!
Look at that! Right off the bat - I have 3 caching freinds!
For now, I'll say... Wish me luck..
